Dear Friends and Colleagues,

October is National Cyber Safety Awareness Month.
National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), conducted every October since 2001, is a national public awareness campaign to encourage everyone to protect their computers and our nation’s critical cyber infrastructure.
Cyber security requires vigilance 365 days per year. However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC), the primary drivers of NCSAM, coordinate to shed a brighter light in October on what home users, schools, businesses and governments need to do in order to protect their computers, children, and data.
CNN.com recently published an article about staying secure online, especially on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Read the article

Phishing is a common sport for identity thieves – don’t take the bait!

My Yahoo Account was going to be suspended…I had to act quickly…but wait…what Yahoo account?!

A personal story from Sunita Pradhan, OM, Schools-On-I-Net:

You can guess just how “Google” I am – even if you don’t know me personally:  the SOIN software is integrated with Google Apps for Education, we offer training on Google Apps as well as free Google Apps Setup, and generally help others get the most out of Google services.

But even I was tempted by an email threatening to suspend my Yahoo account if I didn’t click on a “fix-it-now” link.  I mean, who wants to risk an account suspension that could affect personal credit scores in this economy?

After taking a second look at the email, I realized it was a fake!  The link was probably a porthole for bad people to infiltrate my computer; or it could have been a fake form setup by identity thieves for gathering my personal information….. I don’t know for sure where the link lead to, but I believe it was to nowhere good.

This email was an example of “phishing.”
Just like telling our children not to talk to strangers in the playground, it is our responsibility to share awareness on how not to talk to strangers online.

Click here to find out how I identified the email as a fake plus my 5 tips for email safety.

NYC School adopts SOIN’s Resources Link

New! Resources Link on Schools-On-I-Net

When staff members at George Westinghouse High School in Brooklyn mentioned that their school was in desperate need of a centralized way to share their school’s most important information, the SOIN Team had the perfect solution.

“Why can’t we just have an icon or somewhere on SOIN to put all these forms and documents that everyone needs to access?” a few staff members had asked a SOIN team member.  “It would be even better if we could decide who could see what too, so that we could post stuff for faculty without fear of students seeing it.”

Enter the RESOURCES LINK pictured underneath the MY CLASSES LINK below.

“We took the SOIN Newsletters feature that many schools use to share Parent, Faculty and Class Newsletters, and gave schools the option to call it “Resources”  to accomplish George Westinghouse’s goal to use the module in a broader sense,” explains Sunita Pradhan of SOIN.  “Teachers loved the way they could now create resource categories (Important Staff Forms, Staff Bulletins, PTA Newsletter, Student Documents, for example) and have a one-stop spot to share things securely online and decide who has access to them.”

As the screen capture below demonstrates, George Westinghouse staff can now very easily navigate and create Resource Categories at their school. One was created for Student Resources and is accessible by all user types:  staff, students and parents.  Another category was called Marine Science Lesson Plans which contains examples and references that only the staff can access.

“This Resources link is really great,” said Brent Sackris, a special educator at the school.  “There was a great emphasis this year placed on sharing and discussing lesson plans from the school’s administration, and this new Resource Link on our SOIN page makes that task so much easier!  It’s also great that we can post school-wide documents, like the school’s Grading Policy, to students instead of having to keep multiple paper copies on hand.”

“This is so much better than having to haul a flash drive around with all sorts of general information,” said Debbie Randorf, the school’s librarian.

“The greatest thing about the Resource Link is that it can be monitored for different levels of user access by Resource Type from a single location on SOIN,” Sunita Pradhan continued.  “This is another great example of how individual school feedback can be used to create an even better SOIN experience for our clients.”

Engaging Parents Using the SOIN Grade Book and Assignments Module
krieger schechter day school

“Last year I used the Assignments section to place what was done in class and labeled it, “What We Did (WWD)“. This year I have expanded my labels to include,

  • What We Did (WWD)
  • Back 2 School (B2S)
  • Parents Please Sign (PPS) and
  • Special Parent Assignment (SPA)

This way, my Back 2 School syllabus did not need to be handed out, only to be left behind – parents and students can read it online anytime. Instead of sending home several copies of permission forms before one comes back, I can let parents know that it is coming home and remind them and the students that it needs to be returned.

When I want parents to review with the students the B2S Syllabus, or other things, the PSA category comes in handy. Note that all of these headings need to be initially set up in the grade book profile.

SOIN Tip:  Print Class Lists fom the Attendance Module

The need: Teachers wanted a quick and easy way to print out blank attendance sheets for all classes for a week at a time. Later, teachers let us know that having the same grid list of students names without the date would be extremely helpful too.

The result: SOIN has two links on the Attendance screen to make it easy for teachers to print their class lists with and without dates.

1. Teachers login
2. Click Academics
3. Click Attendance
4. Click on the link “View/Print blank sheet for all classes”(has dates) or “View/Print blank sheet for all classes without schedule”

Note: Scroll down to see all your classes listed in the PDF.

Need to make changes to your class roster?
-> Teachers use the My Classes link to assign and remove students to your classes or contact your SOIN administrator with your add/drop requests.

PS: This is a great way to verify your class rosters are accurate!

Gmail Tip: How to forward my school Gmail to a personal account

Why do we give parents school Google Apps Gmail accounts?
Schools-On-I-Net gives each parent, student, teacher and administrator to accomplish a truly personalized experience.

What is the benefit of giving parents school email accounts?
The benefits to the school are:

  1. The school can effectively set an email policy, where its responsibility is to send email to the official school email address
  2. It then becomes the parents’ responsibility to make sure that they setup their accounts to receive school email.
  3. SOIN Communications links help our users send targeted group email, without having to manage ever-changing email addresses or managing email groups (ie, by grade or class)
  4. The school no longer has to chase after parent to provide an email address or spend time in updating records when email addresses change or families enter or leave the school.

Parent Teacher Conference Scheduling by SOIN

Our parents enjoyed the luxury of scheduling their appointments online.  The parent scheduling release date and time was as important to many of them as a special offer on airfare. They clearly understood  (we did mention this fact on all parent announcements) that being the first one in would be advantageous for them. We received many positive comments from parents on how easy it was to follow the steps and print a schedule of their own.

…Overall, it was one of the smoothest modules we have used. I’m almost looking forward to PTC time again this year!

Give your parents the luxury of scheduling conferences with SOIN’s PTC Module…PTC logo for Parent Teacher Conference Scheduler by SOIN

and make conference time something you’ll look forward to too.

The PTC Module by Schools-On-I-Net  is an integrated Parent Teacher Conference Scheduling and Reservation System that was built from the ground up by our team.

Integration with demographics and academic data is seamless.

By allowing parents to select their own appointment times, parents can setup a PTC schedule that works for them, which works for the teachers and which avoids hours of pen and paper scheduling or hours of standing in line.

Online PTC Scheduling makes it easier for school administrators to manage the overall conference process and spend less time on the logistics of managing appointments.

educationtechnologyhelpvideoforsoin

Parents love it because they see all ONLY the teachers that their children have classes with – eliminating the need for parents to select teachers from a full directory of staff members.
Parents love seeing available times, conflict detections and the ability to request a phone call instead of an in-person timeslot.

Teachers love it because it allows them to manage their own conference session times.  Teachers can pull reports as parents are signing up, so they can plan their breaks, get their papers and student files organized, and call parents in advance to work out any timing requets.

Teachers using Schools-On-I-Net’s Grade Book Module can print out Student Wise Grade Book Reports so that they have the history of a student’s academic performance handy at the appointment time.

Administrators love it because it simply makes life a bit easier at conference time. SOIN PTCs allow admins to schedule global breaks, individual breaks, set open sign ups, help parents schedule appointments, and hide certain subjects. Plus the reports make it easy to manage the project and avoid conflict.  And since teachers can print and manage their own schedules, the workload is a bit lighter for the administrator.

Collaboration and Assessment are important key words in education today.  Schools-On-I-Net’s Lesson Plan module facilitates collaboration and assessment in a green (paperless), easy and effective way.
  • Lesson Plans allow teachers to submit their plans online to principals who collaborate on lessons, offer advice and get a cross – curricular bird’s eye view on how all teachers are progressing in classes.
  • Teachers gain guidance from administration and have an online record of lessons with the ability to keep comments on successful and less effective lessons.
  • Teachers can access last year’s lessons on SOIN so they can self – assess their curriculum and see how they are doing from year to year.

Here’s how:

  1. Teachers login
  2. Click Academics
  3. Click My Lesson Plan

RK Solutions, LLC was formed in 1999 by Rekha Karnik as a product development company.  It was Ms. Karnik’s foresight to move from an IT consulting firm, Vision Technology Group, Inc., to a product and services company before the burst of the “IT bubble.” RK Solutions, LLC developed various online tools for clients in the US.  The prime endeavor, Schools-On-I-Net, was adopted by Ms. Karnik and daughter, Miss Sunita Pradhan.

“We are very proud of everything we have accomplished over the last ten years. I wanted to honor my mom, a school teacher in Mumbai; I wanted to help parents like me who needed a tool to keep involved with schoolwork and events; I wanted to make education even more about the children by streamlining traditional processes.

We are very fortunate to have met people who believed in our product and services and who continue to support us.

Sephardic Rosh Hashanah Seder at Yavneh Academy

Sephardic Rosh Hashanah Seder

This Thursday our third grade students will participate in a Sephardic Rosh Hashanah Seder. This the first time ever at Yavneh Academy!

Being a Persian Jew I am really excited to share my minhagim (traditions) with my students. Tomorrow I will go to the fruit and vegetable market to purchase different items. For example: pomegranate, zuccinni, chives, dates and of coarse apples. We will also have red kidney beans that I will purchase in a can.The children will also recite the proper Yehi Razons before they eat anything and learn why the brachah goes with that specific food item. For example for the pomegranate we are hoping to have done as much mitvot (good deeds) as the seeds in a pomegranate. The only thing missing from our seder is tongue (to be the head and not the tail).

This will be a very exciting day at Yavneh Academy not only for the students but my fellow faculty members who are looking forward to learning what the persians old traditions are to this very joyous time of the year. I want to wish everyone a very healthy and happy new year!

PS I will post the pictures from the special day soon! Keep checking for them

Taking Attendance at Yavneh Academy Using School’s on I Net

Taking Attendance at Yavneh Academy using School’s On I Net

This year at Yavneh Academy teachers in the lower school are required to take attendance using Schools on Net. In the past everyday we were required to write down on paper each child’s name  who was absent. A person from the office would pick up the document and then hand it to the nurse. The nurse was responsible to enter into the computer the students names from the entire school who were absent on a given day. There were many steps to this process which caused many problems. The teachers had to also write on the paper which bus the child would have taken home if  he/she was in school.

The problem arrived when a child would come to school late and wouldn’t report to the office to have his/her name removed from the absentee list. Often at  end of the day the teachers who had bus duty would have the wrong list and sometimes children who were assumed absent were really in school. As you could see there was a “balagan”.

Now taking attendance is just 1 click away. Simply you log onto your  account and look for attendance. Automatically it shows 100% attendance which makes it simple for you without needing to click each and every student who is in class. If a child is absent or late you simply click what ever the case may be and that is it! After we do attendance which takes about  a whole minute we then print 2 copies. One for us to have to give to the teacher who is teaching in the afternoon and 1 for the office to have for their records. Its that simple!

Thank you Schools on Net for making it easier for us!

Education Technology: SOIN White Board at Yavneh Academy

Yavneh’s   White Board is open!

Finally this past Friday we teachers got access to the Staff White Board on our Schools-On-I-Net system. The whole summer teachers were given limited access while the school office setup the academic year…this past Friday we were able to access our full accounts and see the white board.

The reason I’m so excited to get the white board back is because its the best way we as a family within our school communicate with each other in a quick and fun way (only faculty and staff members can use the Staff White Board). Any day you will find a member of the faculty or Administration using the white board to announce a birth of a new child or grandchild…. in return we wish him/her a Mazal Tov!  Often we are invited to a bris or wedding on the white board.  Oh yes, and announcements of future meetings, times and room numbers are also just a click away.

The SOIN white board is our mini network as well…just last year I knew of a girl coming from Israel and who was looking to find work in the US as a nanny.  I put a message on the white board to see if anyone was looking for a nanny from Israel and to let me know.  Only 2 seconds later I received a few responses for my search. The girl came happily knowing she had a  job waiting for her.

We use the staff whiteboard to share websites that are helpful to use in the classroom simply by pasting the web address onto the white board. Last year we shared many holiday sites for great lessons on Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Chanukah etc. They were sites that we all,  including the students,  enjoyed.

Today I finally checked the whiteboard and Yes! there were announcements, some fellow teachers have posted sites on getting started in the academic year and tips for using SmartBoards, and some have posted on new babies who were welcomed over the summer. One faculty member had a boy in July and 2 faculty members announced the arrival of new grandchildren. Mazal tov to all!!

Back to School

Back to School at Yavneh Academy

I cant believe theres only a few weeks left to summer vacation! Today I will go into my classroom and start on my bulletin boards. I thought of the go green concept. I will choose green as the color to use to decorate. Now what am I going to put on the bulletin boards? Sudenly the idea of recycle came to mind. How could I use brand new paper to decorate when conserving trees are the main point of the display. I searched the recycling bins (paper) and found many colorful shapes and sizes that I decided to use for my bulletin boards and I named it 100% recylcled!

What do parents see on SOIN over the summer?

Schools-On-I-Net online school management allows administrators to work on class data while allowing parents and students to access community links during the summer.

There is a setting for admins to hide class information from parents/students and teachers while at the same time allowing them to continue accessing their Google Apps accounts, plus other important links like Forms, Photo Galleries, Newsletters and more.

Office staff and academic administrators will be able to login as usual and see their full accounts so they can work on class lists, student assignments, and teacher schedules.

SOIN Admins: go to School Setup > School Parameters and look for the parameters to Show Academic Information to Parent/Students (Y/N) and Show Academic Informatino to Teachers (Y/N).

Parents, students and teachers will have limited access as shown below.

Here is what parents/students and teachers will see.
