In 1999, a single working mother who worked in Information Technology for 20 some years (for Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Wang and etc) and who owned a 150 employee IT consultancy firm was scheduling meetings and communicating day-to-day with her employees and clients via the Internet. She thought to herself: Why can’t I be as involved with my daughters’ education? Why can’t I email their teachers, look up basketball practice, or know ahead of time of projects and tests? Why can’t my daughters’ schools be on the Internet?
She couldn’t find the answer to this question so she decided to create it. She enlisted the help of her daughter for the mission, and, utilizing her own resources and personal finances, started development of Schools On I-Net.
Schools-On-I-Net quickly went from being a school-parent portal, to becoming a comprehensive school management and student administration system.
Schools-On-I-Net, or SOIN for short, was built with the following goals:
Parents and Students should be engaged using today’s latest technologies
Teachers should have the tools they need so they can focus more on educating and less on administration
Administrators should have access to information quickly and easily to see the complete story of a child and make data driven decisions
The school should not be burdened with the task of maintaining infrastructure or hosting the application.
The school should not need a robust technology department to successfully reach their technology goals.
The school should be able to promote eco friendliness and save money by reducing paper, ink and postage as well as eliminating redundant effort.
SOIN makes the connection between technology and personal experience and provides its users – administrators, teachers, parents and students – with tools that they can use to easily carry out day-to-day activities and make informed decisions.
