Schools On I-Net: an Educator’s Perspective
by Laurette Kurpiewski
Schools On I-Net has developed a comprehensive classroom management tool which integrates so many of the aspects of an academic environment. Teachers who use the program have the ability to finally get organized and be able to spend more time teaching, rather than managing data. All the necessary classroom management tools can be found in one place - on the SOIN system. There’s no need for a cluttered desk, forgetting important events, missing out on important announcements, difficulty communicating with parents, or even flipping through grade books and attendance records when filling out report cards.
The site is very easy to navigate and is displayed in appropriate academic backgrounds. Icons are user-friendly and accurately depict their functions. Each teacher gets her/his own Homepage which displays announcements, alerts number of unread e-mail messages, and provides links to all management tools such as Attendance, Grade Book, Assignments, Report Cards, and Conference Schedules. The ease with which one can move from one component of this program to another is amazing. Even someone with limited computer knowledge can easily navigate the site.
The uniqueness of this program is that everyone involved in the school, faculty, students, administrators and parents, get their own login ID and password with a secure e-mail account, making communication between any or all parties extremely easy. There is no need to locate outside e-mail addresses. Students can easily send e-mails to their teachers and other staff members using SOINMAIL. SOINMAIL is used as an intra-school community email.
Academic resources for the instructor include an online Lesson Plan, Grade Book, Attendance, Report Cards, and Conference Schedule. A teacher must always have access to plans, grades and attendance. These are usually kept in three separate binders or notebooks which do not co-ordinate well with each other. One outstanding feature of this program is the integration of data. For example, entries in Attendance and Final Grades in Grade Book are automatically uploaded to the Report Cards eliminating the need for redundancy.
Another example of eliminating the duplication of tasks is demonstrated in the My Assignments Module. A student who missed an assignment due to illness can be e-notified with the specifics of the assignment just by clicking a button. The teacher does not need to write the assignment again. This eliminates the need to take valuable class time away from students who are present in order to write homework assignments for those who are not. The office secretary or school nurse does not need to get involved in coordinating absent students with their missed homework assignments or materials either. Parents can also be informed of the missed assignment by accessing their own Parent Homepage. There, they can see an “Over the shoulder” view of their child/ children’s assignments.
Lesson plans can be viewed daily or weekly and can be submitted online to the academic administrators for review or printed as needed. As assignments are entered, they are automatically posted for students and parents to view when that option is selected. The teacher can plan ahead and set a due date to make the assignment visible. Faculty also have the ability to view Tests & Quizzes assigned by other teachers , so that if a teacher wants to plan an important Unit Test, she/he can check others’ assignments to make sure there are not more than one or more tests given on any day.
The best part about the Grade Book is that it encompasses all the details of grading, yet is so easy to use. It allows the instructor to set up a Grade Book Profile which allows choices as to category of assignment (Homework, Unit Test, etc.,) types of grades (letter, numerical, etc,) and weight of assignment. Teachers can define status of assignment to grades such as submitted or incomplete, and add comments and stickers to grades. Grades can be viewed individually, by category, and marking period. You can even print the Grade Book . A choice to allow the assignment grades and final grades to be viewed by students and parents can also be made. The Report Card mirrors the actual school report card. Final Grades and Attendance are automatically uploaded to Report Cards. Just imagine the time that can be saved with this feature.
The Attendance feature is also easy to understand and a time saver. Teachers can electronically mark attendance with specific marks such as Present, Absent, Excused, Tardy, Left Early, and Discharged. A space for comments is also included. Once a teacher takes Attendance, it becomes automatically available to the Nurse, Administrator’s Office and Parents. There is no need to send students on the “Attendance Mission.” A daily, weekly, or monthly summary can be made for an individual student or class. Summaries can also be made by marking period. Administration can also easily track student attendance for state reporting.
The Calendar is available to all and co-ordinates school-related and personal events. This color-coded calendar makes it so easy to view. Teachers, students, parents and administrators can view scheduled tests, school events, meetings and activities at-a-glance. Personal events can also be added to avoid scheduling conflicts. Calendar events are shown on user’s homepage for easy viewing and access. The Calendar can be printed and posted for easy viewing.
Finally, the incomparable Schools On I-Net class management tool has arrived. It is the ultimate in time-saving, reporting, and communication. It can be accessed from school, home, or anywhere with Internet access. Faculty Administrators, students, and their parents would all benefit from this software. It truly allows teachers to easily manage class data so that she/he has more actual teaching time. This product is sure to be on every Instructor’s wish list.

RK Solutions, LLC announces that 70% of classes at Fairview Park Schools currently using Schools-On-I-Net used the SOIN Report Cards Module to successfully input report card grades and comments for Ohio’s statewide student information system, eSIS.
RK Solutions, LLC announces that 70% of classes at Fairview Park Schools currently using Schools-On-I-Net used the SOIN Report Cards Module to successfully input report card grades and comments for Ohio’s statewide student information system, eSIS.
Last year, RKS developed a customized SOIN Report Card Module for the Fairview Park School District to provide teachers with an easier way of entering report card data. SOIN Report Cards do the following:
Because the SOIN system can be easily accessed from home or work (almost any computer which has an internet connection), the SOIN Report Card module provides a very useful, and powerful time-saving way for teachers at Fairview High School and Lewis F. Mayer Middle School to enter report card and interim data. SOIN Report Cards are dynamic, based upon term and marking period. Once data has been entered by teachers, office staff personnel can export that information in the eSIS program. For the last marking period, grades and comments for over 70% of the classes at Fairview High School and Mayer Middle School were input through the SOIN Report Cards Module.
Additionally the SOIN Report Card Module allows school principals or academic administrators the ability to review student report cards beforehand. Report Cards can be locked and then published to parents and students. Schools On I-Net captures the way report cards are carried out in school, and creates an online version that is teacher friendly, effective and which saves time and money. Report Card data can feed into the SOIN Transcripts module.
- Populate data automatically from the SOIN Grade Book Module
- Populate data automatically form the SOIN Attendance Module
- Export data to be used in eSIS, the Ohio State student information system.
SOIN has worked with LEECA and Mr. Mark Kostur, Director of Technology at Fairview Park Schools to create this time-saving, teacher friendly module for the Fairview Park School District.

Use Digital Lockers, by Schools On I-Net
RK Solutions, LLC announces Schools On I-Net (SOIN) Digital Lockers used by teachers and students to store paperless projects.
The SOIN Digital Lockers allow teachers and students to store files in personal accounts on their school’s Schools On I-Net web platform.
Individuals can start working on a project at school, upload the file to their account on the website and retrieve it at home to complete later without having to use email. This ensures that there is one working copy of the project in use and avoids the need to access email or search through emails to find project files. Members can keep projects, references, class notes, and more in their SOIN Digital Lockers.
Schools On I-Net provides each user with plenty of storage space to keep items in their personal Digital Lockers.
SOIN Digital Lockers can be easily organized by using Folders and Subfolders. Important files can be maintained by class and/or by topic.
Digital Lockers add a file storage facility to the Schools On I-Net platform. Students are able to keep projects in digital format, and when completed, students can ’submit’ their work to teachers. Teachers can pick up work submitted through the SOIN website and review and add comments to the submitted file; then go into their online Grade Books to record the grade. Schools On I-Net brings technology used in the real world into the school and offers its users the ability to become comfortable and well versed with today’s digital methods, all in keeping with a K12 environment. SOIN’s tools are practical and easy to use. SOIN provides one place for users to work, communicate and review school related data, including academic information, class announcements, online grades and district-wide events.
